Many businesses not ready for phase out of Canada's penny ...

OTTAWA ? The penny is about to drop? ? with many businesses unprepared and the federal government having only limited success informing Canadians of the looming change to, well, change.

The one-cent coin?s final days of widespread use are drawing near. The Royal Canadian Mint will stop distributing pennies to financial institutions on Feb. 4 ? the same day businesses are encouraged to begin rounding cash transactions to the nearest five-cent increment in a ?fair and transparent manner.?

For example, a transaction totalling $1.02 would round down to $1, but a purchase of $1.03 would round up to $1.05, while $1.07 would round down to $1.05 and a purchase of $1.08 would round up to $1.10.

Transactions paid with cheques, credit cards and debit cards will continue to be settled to the cent. The GST and HST will be calculated on the pre-tax price, not the rounded price.

Canadians who hoard their pennies will still, however, be able to use pennies indefinitely to pay for purchases.

While the transition date is just days away, many small businesses are clearly not ready for the penny?s phase-out. Managers and business owners at a number of merchants in the national capital offered blank stares when asked about it. Other shop owners simply shrugged their shoulders.

?We?re not prepared in the least,? said Judy Mance, manager of Kameleon PopShop in Ottawa, a store specializing in jewelry and women?s fashion.

Mance said she has heard bits and pieces about the penny being phased out, but was unfamiliar with the Feb. 4 transition date or the specifics of when to round up or down.

She noted the family business ? located a block from Parliament Hill ? hasn?t received any notification from the federal government about the transition.

Nevertheless, she said the business is just as happy to round up or down for customers to avoid having to hand out pennies, something she said the store has regularly done for some time.

?Our small change has been devalued because it doesn?t buy much,? she added. ?I find people don?t even count their change anyway.?

The Conservative government announced in last March?s federal budget it was ending production of the penny because it actually cost 1.6 cents to mint each of the one-cent coins, due to rising metal, labour and other manufacturing costs.

Ottawa says that stamping out the penny for good also will save taxpayers around $11 million a year.

To help retailers, charities and consumers, the federal government has created a web portal on the Finance Canada website, including downloadable signage that can be displayed in-store.

The Mint has also launched a social media campaign on Facebook and Twitter to alert Canadians about the transition date. As well, approximately 225,000 printed flyers were placed in Canada Post outlets across the country explaining the changes.

A series of print, radio, television and online ads have begun to appear across Canada, and will circulate until the end of March.

Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) president Dan Kelly said a number of his members aren?t prepared for the transition away from the penny.

?Business awareness is low,? Kelly acknowledged, explaining many business owners likely won?t realize the change until they go to the bank and can no longer get rolls of pennies. ?There certainly will be a few transitional hiccups.?

The primary concern for business owners, he said, is consumers unaware of? the rounding off changes may think store employees are trying to cheat them out of a few pennies.

At Canada?s Four Corners, a crafts and souvenir shop in downtown Ottawa, manager Reza Ghaffari said the penny phase-out ?is not a big deal.? He would like to see the government also eliminate the nickel and round cash transactions to the nearest zero.

?I think it should average itself out during the day,? Ghaffari said.

Ian Kimmerly, owner of a stamp shop bearing his name, said Friday his business hasn?t done anything to prepare for the transition, nor is he in a hurry to do so. He said his business will continue to provide pennies, as long as they have them on hand, to customers who want them.

?We have a lot of older customers who remember when a penny was worth something. For those customers, we?ll be happy to give (pennies) to them,? he said.

Many consumers may not even notice the change. A majority of retail and hospitality purchases are paid by credit card (35 per cent) and debit card (27 per cent), according to data from the CFIB, which represents 109,000 small and medium-sized businesses in Canada.

Only 19 per cent of retail and hospitality transactions are paid by cash, with 15 per cent by cheque, says the CFIB.

Karen Proud, a vice-president at the Retail Council of Canada which represents about 45,000 stores,? figures approximately half of the businesses are ready for the change.

It will also take time for consumers to adjust, she said, as shoppers receive less or more change than they were expecting.

?In the short term, there is going to be a bit of confusion,? she said.

Along with the rising costs to stamp the penny coin, the government said ending the penny?s production was necessary because Canadians are indifferent to the coin and that it has retained only one-twentieth of its original purchasing power.

Billions of Canadian pennies remain either in circulation, stashed in piggy banks or lining drawers of homes across the country. It will take years to completely remove the coin from circulation.

?To ensure the transition is as smooth as possible and as smooth as in other countries, we?re undertaking a national public awareness campaign to help inform small businesses, retailers, charities, and consumers about how rounding will work,? Shelly Glover, parliamentary secretary to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, said Friday in a statement.

(AP) ? Oh, brother!

John Harbaugh and his Baltimore Ravens set up a family reunion at the Super Bowl, shutting down the New England Patriots 28-13 Sunday in the AFC championship game.

The Ravens reached their first Super Bowl in 12 years, thanks to three touchdown passes from Joe Flacco and a defense led by Ray Lewis that made Tom Brady look downright ordinary.

Next up for Harbaugh and the Ravens is younger brother Jim and the San Francisco 49ers, who beat Atlanta 28-24 earlier in the day for the NFC title.

"I don't know if we had a dream this big," John Harbaugh said. "We had a few dreams, we had a few fights, we had a few arguments ? just like all brothers."

They'll meet in two weeks in New Orleans ? what a place for a party to celebrate the first brother-vs.-brother coaching matchup in Super Bowl history.

It also will be quite a last game for Lewis, the emotional linebacker who will retire after the matchup with the 49ers, who opened as a 5-point favorite.

"This is our time. This is our time," said Lewis, who made 14 tackles Sunday and has 44 in three postseason games after missing 10 weeks with a torn right triceps.

Driven by Lewis' pending departure from the NFL, Baltimore's defense stepped up in the playoffs. Brady was 67-0 at home when leading at halftime, but this was no contest in the second half.

"We've lost before. It takes a while to get over," Brady said.

It also was a first for the Patriots, who hadn't lost an AFC championship at home.

After they had avenged last year's AFC title game loss at Gillette Stadium, many of the Ravens gathered on the field jumping, chest-bumping and whooping before several thousand fans wearing Ravens jerseys ? mostly Lewis' No. 52 ? who remained in the stands.

As in the previous two playoff wins against Indianapolis and Denver, the Ravens (13-6) were brilliant offensively in spots. This might be 17-year-veteran Lewis' team, but it's also Flacco's, and the quarterback's six road wins are the most in playoff history.

"It was pretty awesome," said Flacco, who has eight touchdown passes and no interceptions in the playoffs. "We were here last year and thought we had it, but came up a little short. Guys came out in the second half and made plays. ... We put pressure on them like that, and it worked pretty well."

Flacco, whose contract ends after the Super Bowl, is the only quarterback to win a playoff game in each of his first five seasons. He was dynamic with his arm and precise with his decision making. Looking much more the championship passer than Brady did, his throws of 11 and 3 yards to Anquan Boldin and 5 to Dennis Pitta all were perfect.

The touchdown by Pitta capped the Ravens' best drive of the game, covering 87 yards in 10 plays and made it 14-13. It started with a 15-yard defensive pass interference penalty, and it was an indication of things to come.

"We've always believed in Joe," Harbaugh said. "And for Joe to come out and to have this kind of a game and this kind of a stage three weeks in a row ..."

New England (13-5) lost a home AFC title matchup for the first time in five games. The loss denied Brady and coach Bill Belichick a shot at their sixth Super Bowl. They've gone 3-2, losing their last two times in the big game.

Instead, it's the AFC North champion Ravens heading to the Big Easy, seeking their second NFL championship. San Francisco has won five.

"All these men out there, there might just be only five of us up here, but every man out there sacrificed this year for each other," Lewis said during the trophy ceremony. "And man, we did it and we're on our way to the Super Bowl. That's awesome."

The Ravens have gotten there the hard way, with no postseason bye. Then again, five of the last seven Super Bowl champions took that route.

The Ravens also were pushed into a second overtime in frigid Denver last weekend before eliminating Peyton Manning and the top-seeded Broncos.

And now they've cast aside the league's most successful franchise of the last dozen years.

"I'd probably say we came up a little short in every area," Belichick said.

New England, which hasn't won a Super Bowl since the 2004 season, had four injuries, the scariest when running back Stevan Ridley was knocked flat by Bernard Pollard in the fourth quarter, forcing a fumble. Baltimore turned that into the final touchdown, on the only short scoring drive it had, 47 yards.

The Ravens gained just 130 yards in the first half.

Brady guided a 13-play drive to Stephen Gostkowski's 31-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Neither defense yielded a big play, and punters Zoltan Mesko and Sam Koch were the busiest guys on the field.

That changed when the teams switched sides for the second quarter. Baltimore again was pinned deep, at its 10, but Flacco led a 13-play drive. Ray Rice, whose 83-yard run on the Ravens' first play from scrimmage in their wild-card round victory here three years ago, ran left untouched for the TD.

Awakened by Baltimore's march, the Patriots staged a long one of their own, 79 yards, aided by a 15-yard personal foul by Ravens linebacker Dannell Ellerbe. Wes Welker picked up 24 yards on a short pass, then got free in the right corner of the end zone after a mix-up in the Ravens' secondary, making it 10-7.

It was 13-7 by halftime as Gostkowski connected from 25 yards, with New England outsmarting Baltimore several times. Danny Woodhead ran for 7 yards on a direct snap on fourth-and-1 in the drive. Defensive end Paul Kruger, who's good at sacks, not much in coverage ? found himself downfield on Aaron Hernandez on what became a 17-yard reception.

But Brady made a mental error himself, not calling timeout quickly enough after a short scramble. So the Patriots didn't get a shot at the end zone and Gostkowski made his second kick.

Shockingly for an offense that scored 557 points this season, that was it for New England.

"We are probably the only team in the AFC that matches up good with the boy, No. 12 over there and his coach," linebacker Terrell Suggs said of Brady and Belichick.

NOTES: Brady now has 5,949 yards passing, the most in NFL history for the postseason. He threw for 320 yards Sunday but was picked off twice in the fourth quarter. ... Ridley sustained a head injury but walked off the field. Patriots CB Aqib Talib hurt his thigh and DT Kyle Love injured his knee. Backup safety Patrick Chung was helped off the field after one play. ... Baltimore beat San Francisco 16-6 in the 2011 season.

Obama Calls First Lady's Bangs 'Most Significant' Event of Inaugural Weekend

President Obama used the first public remarks of his second term to address what he called the "most significant" event of this weekend: his wife's much-talked-about new haircut.

"I love her bangs," Obama told supporters at an inaugural reception at the National Building Museum. "She looks good. She always looks good."

First lady Michelle Obama, wearing a black sequined cocktail dress and showcasing her new hairdo, also heaped compliments on her husband.

"Let me tell you, it has just been a true thrill to watch this handsome, charming individual grow into the man and the president that he is," she said, as she reached out to playfully touch the president's face, sparking laughter from the crowd.

Praising his compassion and courage, the first lady introduced the president as the "love of her life."

Obama, who was sworn in for a second term in a small White House ceremony earlier today, kept his remarks short, noting he has another big speech to deliver Monday.

"There are a limited amount of good lines and you don't want to use them all up tonight," he joked.

Because the Constitutionally mandated date for the inauguration, Jan. 20, fell on a Sunday this year, the traditional, public ceremony was delayed until Monday.

Saving the best for his official inaugural address, the president instead dedicated the bulk of his remarks to thanking supporters for their hard work and dedication to getting him re-elected.

"You understood this was not just about a candidate; it was not just about Joe Biden or Barack Obama. This was about us, who we are as a nation, what values we cherish, how hard we're willing to fight to make sure that those values live not just for today but for future generations," he said.

"All of you here understood and were committed to the basic notion that when we put our shoulders to the wheel of history, it moves? It moves forward. And that's part of what we celebrate when we come together for inauguration," he said.

ATLANTA (AP) ? The loss stuck with them for a year, pushing the San Francisco 49ers in everything they did.

They didn't want to feel that way again.

Not to worry.

The 49ers are headed to the Super Bowl.

Bouncing back from a bitter loss in the 2012 NFC championship game, San Francisco cleared the hurdle it couldn't quite get over the previous season. And, boy, did the 49ers earn it, rallying from an early 17-0 deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons 28-24 on Sunday.

"We worked so hard," said Frank Gore, who ran for a pair of touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 8:23 remaining. "We knew that we got here last year and it didn't happen. But we got back and we said to ourselves, as a team, that this time we've got to walk through the door. You really don't get opportunities like this."

The 49ers used to get them all the time, winning five Super Bowl titles in the 1980s and '90s. Now, with a clutch quarterback (Colin Kaepernick), a budding genius of a coach (Jim Harbaugh) and a big-play defense, they're ready to start a new dynasty.

They were one win away from playing for it all last season, until a fumbled return in the NFC championship game led to the winning field goal in overtime for the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

When the Falcons raced to their big lead by the first play of the second quarter, San Francisco (13-4-1) appeared headed for more disappointment.

But no one lost faith, and the 49ers pulled off the biggest comeback victory ever in an NFC championship game, according to STATS.

The previous record was 13 points ? Atlanta's victory over Minnesota in the 1999 title game, which sent the Falcons to what remains the only Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. The AFC championship game record is 18 points, when Indianapolis rallied past New England in 2007.

"I don't really think it's destiny or anything like that written on the walls," 49ers defensive tackle Justin Smith said. "It's the team that works the hardest, prepares the hardest, and has the best players and coaching staff. You pour all that in together and it comes out pretty good at the end."

The 49ers advanced to face Baltimore at New Orleans in two weeks, looking to join Pittsburgh as the only franchises with six Super Bowl titles. It'll be a brother-vs.-brother matchup, too; John Harbaugh coaches the Ravens.

But Jim Harbaugh wasn't concerned about a family reunion.

He was hoppin' mad when a disputed call went against the 49ers on Atlanta's potential winning drive in the closing minutes. Harbaugh leaped in the air, screamed at the officials and had to be restrained by his staff from charging the field.

But the 49ers stopped Atlanta on a fourth-down play at their own 10, as linebacker NaVorro Bowman reached in to swat the ball away from Roddy White on a pass across the middle with 1:09 remaining.

San Francisco ran off all but the final 6 seconds, not nearly enough time for Matt Ryan to pull out another improbable comeback.

The previous week, Atlanta (14-4) squandered a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter against the Seattle Seahawks, nearly becoming the first team to lose with such a daunting advantage in the final period of a playoff game. But Ryan completed two long passes in the final 30 seconds, and Matt Bryant kicked a 49-yard field goal for a 30-28 victory.

After Gore's second TD gave San Francisco its first lead of the day, the Falcons took the ensuing kickoff and used up nearly all the clock while going 70 yards. They might have reclaimed the lead if Harry Douglas had been able to stay on his feet while hauling in a 22-yard pass.

The defender slipped, leaving Douglas all alone down the sideline. But he tripped, too, doing well to make the catch without the ball hitting the turf. Harbaugh thought it did, challenging the call, but the referee ruled it a catch after looking at the replay.

That's when Harbaugh nearly lost it.

It all worked out, though.

"We rose up there at the end," Harbaugh said. "It was a great finish for our defense, an exclamation point on the game."

The Falcons ran up and down the field in the first two quarters, piling up 17 first downs and 297 yards for a 24-14 lead. Ryan played a nearly perfect half, completing 18 of 24 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Julio Jones. When Tony Gonzalez hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds remaining, restoring a double-digit lead, it looked as though Atlanta had weathered the 49ers' comeback.

Actually, the Falcons were done, at least on the scoreboard.

They were held scoreless over the final two periods by the 49ers, who seized on two key mistakes by Ryan. First, after guiding the Falcons into San Francisco territory, he was picked off by Chris Culliver. Then, with Atlanta well within field-goal range at the 49ers 28, Ryan took his eye off a shotgun snap for a split-second and the ball bounced off his hands. Aldon Smith recovered for San Francisco.

"Against a good football team like that, you can't have those kinds of mistakes," Ryan said. "We moved the ball really effectively all day. We just had two chances where we were in positive territory and didn't walk away with points."

The 49ers are headed to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1995, when they won the last of their championships.

"We've come full circle," said Denise DeBartolo York, part of the family that has owned the 49ers since their championship days, "and the dynasty will prevail."

The city by the bay is rapidly becoming the new Titletown USA. The 49ers will try follow the lead of the baseball Giants, who gave San Francisco a World Series championship in October.

Kaepernick didn't get a chance to show off his touchdown celebration for the 49ers ? flexing his right arm and kissing his bicep, a move that quickly became a social media sensation known as Kaepernicking.

But the second-year quarterback who runs like a track star shredded the Falcons through the air by completing 16 of 21 for 233 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown to Vernon Davis. Plus, he caused so much concern about his running ability out of the spread option that Gore and LaMichael James found plenty of huge holes.

Ryan had the best playoff game of his career, completing 30 of 42 for 396 yards. His favorite target was Jones, who hauled in scoring passes of 46 and 20 yards on the way to finishing with 11 catches for 182 yards.

But it wasn't enough to extend the career of Gonzalez, the Hall of Famer-to-be who has said all along this would likely be his final season.

He sure sounded like it was over.

"I've had such a great life," he said. "I wish it would've culminated with the Super Bowl, but it didn't."

Gore scored on runs of 5 and 9 yards, finishing with 90 yards on 21 carries. James picked up the first TD for the 49ers on a 15-yard run. Davis had five catches for 106 yards, and the 49ers overcame a fumble by Michael Crabtree just short of the goal line early in the fourth quarter, giving the Falcons a glimmer of hope.

"I take my hat off to Atlanta. They played hard. They've got a great team," Gore said. "But we fought, man. We fought and we deserved it."

And no one was thinking about last season anymore.

Notes: The Falcons rushed for only 81 yards and lost Michael Turner in the second half to an ankle injury. He gained 30 yards on eight carries. ... San Francisco K David Akers had another miss in a dismal season, clanking a 38-yard attempt off the left upright in the third quarter. ... Jones set a franchise record for receiving yards in a playoff game, topping Alfred Jenkins' mark of 155 in a 1981 loss to Dallas.

Must we provide benefits during leave? - Business Management Daily

Q. Are we required to continue to offer our employees benefits while they are out on leave?

A. The California Family Rights Act (CFRA) provides leave rights for the:

  • Birth of a child or placement of a child in the employee?s family for adoption or foster care
  • Serious health condition of the employee?s child, parent or spouse
  • Employee?s own serious health condition.

Employers do not have to pay employees during CFRA leave, except when an employee uses accrued vacation time or other accumulated paid leave other than accrued sick leave.

But, if the leave is for the employee?s own serious health condition, the employee may elect to (or the employer may require the employee to) use accrued vacation time or other accumulated paid leave, including any accrued sick leave.

During CFRA leave, the employee is entitled to accrual of seniority and to participate in employee benefit plans, including life, short-term or long-term disability or accident insurance, pension and retirement plans and supplemental unemployment benefit plans to the same extent and under the same conditions as would apply to any other leave.

Plus, employers that provide health insurance under a group plan must continue to provide coverage during CFRA leave. The obligation begins when the leave begins and continues for the duration of the leave, up to a maximum of 12 work weeks in a 12-month period. Employees may be required to continue paying their share of the premium contribution.

In addition, two bills (S.B. 299 and A.B. 592) amending the California Fair Employment and Housing Act?s pregnancy disability provisions went into effect Jan. 1, 2012. They require employers to provide pregnant employees the same level of insurance benefits during pregnancy-related leave as they were provided prior to taking the leave. Previously, employers had to maintain health benefits for employees on a pregnancy-disability leave to the same extent that was available to employees out on other medical or disability-related leaves.

As a result of the change, employees who begin a pregnancy disability leave but are not eligible for leave under the federal FMLA or the CFRA until after they go on leave, may be eligible to receive continued health benefits coverage for a maximum of seven months (including four months under the new law and up to 12 weeks under the CFRA and federal law).

Pap Smear Detects Ovarian, Uterine Cancer | WJTV

A pap smear can be used to detect ovarian and uterine cancers, in addition to cervical cancer, according to a study published in Science Translational Medicine.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins used a cervical fluid, which is collected during a Pap smear, to do a genome sequencing called the PapGene.

More studies are needed.

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest form of cancer in women, partly because it's difficult to detect.

My realtor caused me damages, do I have any recourse ... - Zillow ...

Couple of thoughts (many echoing those of others, but from a consumer vice REA - for whatever that may be worth)...

#1 - You are assuming that you've been damaged. That assumes that the seller would have accepted $194K had they not seen the $200K pre-approval. That'd be very hard to prove.

#2 - I somewhat understand the seller's position. They started a $200K, you at $190K. $195K is midpoint, but you've dug your heels in at $194. This is pretty much the exact same scenario I described in a prior post - the one where I told my REA that I had made a reasonable accomodation and if they were going to hold things up over $1K, that they could take their money and go find someone more desperate than I to sell.

#3 - Since your REA is not responding, why are you "stuck" at $194K? Realistically, what's $1K on a $194K transaction, especially since it's going to be financed? You're talking about killing a $194K transaction over a?0.5% difference, $4 a month - and the seller has already met you halfway. Again, why "stuck" at $194K?

(AP) ? America set an off-the-charts heat record in 2012.

A brutal combination of a widespread drought and a mostly absent winter pushed the average annual U.S. temperature last year up to 55.32 degrees Fahrenheit, the government announced Tuesday. That's a full degree warmer than the old record set in 1998.

Breaking temperature records by an entire degree is unprecedented, scientists say. Normally, records are broken by a tenth of a degree or so.

"It was off the chart," said Deke Arndt, head of climate monitoring at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C., which calculated the temperature records.

Last year, he said, will go down as "a huge exclamation point at the end of a couple decades of warming."

The data center's figures for the entire world won't come out until next week, but through the first 11 months of 2012, the world was on pace to have its eighth warmest year on record.

Scientists say the U.S. heat is part global warming in action and natural weather variations. The drought that struck almost two-thirds of the nation and a La Nina weather event helped push temperatures higher, along with climate change from man-made greenhouse gas emissions, said Katharine Hayhoe, director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University. She said temperature increases are happening faster than scientists predicted.

"These records do not occur like this in an unchanging climate," said Kevin Trenberth, head of climate analysis at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. "And they are costing many billions of dollars."

Global warming is caused by the burning of fossil fuels ? coal, oil and natural gas ? which sends heat-trapping gases, such as carbon dioxide, into the air, changing the climate, scientists say.

What's happening with temperatures in the United States is consistent with the long-term pattern of "big heat events that reach into new levels of intensity," Arndt said.

Last year was 3.2 degrees warmer than the average for the entire 20th century. Last July was the hottest month on record. Nineteen states set yearly heat records in 2012, though Alaska was cooler than average.

U.S. temperature records go back to 1895 and the yearly average is based on reports from more than 1,200 weather stations across the Lower 48 states.

Several environmental groups, including the World Wildlife Fund, took the opportunity to call on the Obama Administration to do more to fight climate change.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2012 also had the second-most weather extremes on record after hurricane-heavy 1998, based on a complex mathematical formula that includes temperature records, drought, downpours, and land-falling hurricanes.

Measured by the number of high-damage events, 2012 ranked second after 2011, with 11 different disasters that caused more than $1 billion in damage, including Superstorm Sandy and the drought, NOAA said.

The drought was the worst since the 1950s and slightly behind the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, meteorologists said. During a drought, the ground is so dry that there's not enough moisture in the soil to evaporate into the atmosphere to cause rainfall, which leads to hotter, drier air. This was fed in the U.S. by La Nina, which is linked to drought.

Scientists say even with global warming, natural and local weather changes mean that temperatures will go up and down over the years. But overall, temperatures are climbing. In the United States, the temperature trend has gone up 1.3 degrees over the last century, according to NOAA data. The last year the U.S. was cooler than the 20th-century average was 1997.

The last time the country had a record cold month was December 1983.

What has scientists so stunned is how far above other hot years 2012 was. Nearly all of the previous 117 years of temperature records were bunched between 51 and 54 degrees, while 2012 was well above 55.

"A picture is emerging of a world with more extreme heat," said Andrew Dessler, a Texas A&M University climate scientist. "Not every year will be hot, but when heat waves do occur, the heat will be more extreme. People need to begin to prepare for that future."

WOW! Women On Writing Blog: Friday Speak Out!: Reduce. Re-use ...

That 3-R?ed mantra that works so well for aluminum cans and paper also works for writing. I?ll bet you didn?t know that, huh?

Reduce. With my plan you can reduce the number of topics you need to come up with. The number of submissions you can churn out increases exponentially if you simply follow my advice. (Okay, exponentially is a bit of an exaggeration. But the amount of stuff you send out will increase.)

Re-use. Take one writing idea and use it in a completely different way for another market. If you originally wrote it as a piece of nonfiction, put a twist to it and transform it into a fictional piece. If it started out as a humorous piece but there?s a call for a romance anthology, throw in some heaving bosoms and a chiseled Fabio-esque chest, and voila! You?ve got another submission to send out.

Recycle. Send your piece back into the submission cycle. Just because it was not accepted by a particular editor doesn?t mean it?s without merit. Perhaps the tone of your story was not right for that publication. That doesn?t mean it wouldn?t work for a different magazine or collection.

A couple of years ago I got my head stuck in a sink. It happened after my workday was over, in a staff bathroom with a tiny sink equipped with an overly-large faucet. I had a haircutting appointment right after work and was trying to wash my hair so I could save the $5 shampooing fee my stylist regularly tried to trap me with. Writing a creative nonfiction story about the experience ended exactly how that afternoon ended: a scraped scalp and a valuable lesson learned. (Stop being so darned cheap!) It ended up getting published in Not Your Mother?s Book?On Being a Woman.

Later, a different anthology was being developed, and in the proposed title was ?bad hair day? so I figured my stuck-in-the-sink story would be a perfect fit. Unfortunately, these were supposed to be fictional stories. I deliberately did not have my original story in front of me as I crafted a fabricated tale about that experience, nor did I even skim it to reacquaint myself with the experience, because I wanted this new piece to sound fresh and new, instead of becoming a mere rehashing. In the end of this story, a fire truck was called. Hunky firefighters broke down the door and smashed the sink. I got my picture taken with them. My little slice-of-life story became transformed into a totally new fictional story and ended up being published in that anthology by Mozark Press.

So with a new year beginning, banish that much-hated R word (rejection). Take what you might consider your writing ?trash??it?s been published already or it was rejected?and turn it into published treasure by reducing?reusing?and recycling.

Interview with 2012?s Black List's Marissa Jo Cerar | Just Effing ...

This entry was posted on Wednesday, January 9th, 20132013-01-09T12:14:10Zl, F jS, Y at 4:14 am2013-01-09T12:14:10Zg:i a

The following, brill, totally timely and inspiring interview comes from Lee Zahavi Jessup?s fabulous new website, Career Coaching for the Scrappy Screenwriter. Be sure to check Lee?s site often for more great content. And if you use her coaching, trust me, you will never look back.

Marissa Jo Cerar?s screenplay, CONVERSION, was recently selected to 2012?s The Black List. I interviewed her to gain insight into the significance of the experience, what an up-and-coming writer can expect in today?s industry, and how a girl from a small mid-western town gained traction, found representation, and became optioned in the seemingly uncrackable film and television industry.

Congratulations on being recognized by The Black List this year. What sort of reaction have you received from landing on The Black List 2012?

So far, so good! I?ve received a slew of messages from executives who loved my script and were so happy to see a little indie like CONVERSION make it on the list. Many are anxious to meet after the holidays to discuss potential projects, and some were just stoked to see it on the list.

You said that making The Black List was one of your goals. Why?

Along with many of my writer peers and industry folks I look forward to its release every year. I wish I had a better answer, but it?s just so cool to be immortalized on the list. There are so many amazing movies that have come from The Black List, and I hope my script CONVERSION will be one of them.

What does making The Black List mean to you?

Being on The Black List brings more attention to my script, and it?s also validation of my hard work? and hopefully being on the list shows that I have some writing chops.

Tell me about your start. How did you get started writing?

I knew from a very early age that this is what I wanted to do. I graduated high school early, moved to Chicago, and enrolled in a private film school to earn my BA. My college offered a screenwriting program in Los Angeles, and I was one of seven students that semester who were selected for the program. I finished my final semester in college on the CBS lot in Studio City, where we wrote full time, met writing mentors, development folks, and learned as much as we could to prepare us for this business. I stayed here; that was always the plan, and I worked my ass off, got an internship and a screenwriting mentor, and I wrote daily, entered contests, and saw as many movies as I could afford.

You are from the Midwest. Was the move to Los Angeles challenging, and how did you go about building your network?

The move was easy, because I love Los Angeles, and always knew I belonged here. I?m from an incredibly small town of 1600 people in rural Illinois, and I always dreamed of living in California, so I high-tailed it through high school and college, and never looked back. I, of course, miss my family terribly, but I cherish my life here. I love movies. I love writing. It?s the one thing I know I do well.

As far as ?building my network? if you could call it that, back when I was finishing my last semester of film school, I simply wrote thank you notes to every writer who visited us on the Lot, and one responded. He became my mentor. Miraculously, I was able to work as his assistant and then he actually PAID me to adapt short stories, rewrite and co-write scripts with him as a ?writer for hire?. The money was small, but I gained so much experience, advice, and he and his wife became a great support system. I was 21, so living alone out here was tough. Eventually I moved on, worked at a production company, and I continued to write, enter and place in contests, and I was selected as a fellow for Film Independent?s Project: Involve. I met some of my absolute best friends through Film Independent, and through that fellowship one of my short scripts, STEPS, was produced. I made friends and nurtured relationships, always following up with people because it?s so easy to lose touch here. It also helps if you?re nice. It really does make life easier.

You now have an agent and a manager. How did you come about getting representation?

I?ve been with my managers at Heroes & Villains Entertainment for 4.5 years. I met them the old fashioned way: a referral, but before I met them I placed in a few screenwriting contests, which gave me exposure and dozens of emails from managers and indie producers. Most importantly, I wrote my ass off. I think I had 7 feature scripts as samples for H&V to read after signing me. Heroes & Villains kick started my career. They believe in me, and they were instrumental in getting my material to ICM, who rep me in both film and television. My agents are also remarkable, hard working badasses I truly adore.

What sort of expectations does a writer have from their representation?

You must keep in touch, stay on their radar, and do your part of the job: write good material, write often, and give great meetings. I don?t know what expectations others have of their reps, honestly, but my managers have become like family to me, and while I?ve been with ICM less than a year, I feel valued. They?re always checking in with me and sending me on meetings. I feel fortunate to have found such a great team. I would advise new writers to sign with companies they feel comfortable with ? especially with managers, who have to be our therapists when things are rough.

You go a on a lot of General Meetings. Can you tell my readers what Generals are, and what happens during them, more or less?

Generals are meetings after an exec has read your material and passed, for whatever reason, but enjoyed the script and your voice. They want to meet you, find out about your background, your other projects, and perhaps consider you for future writing assignments.

Generals are no-pressure meetings: you go in, talk about your life, your path to writing, your inspiration and the projects you?re working on now. In my view, you must have an arsenal of ideas (and a good personality) to make the most of these meetings.

Is it more important to have a solid film spec or TV pilot these days, or both? And why?

I can only speak from my experience as a writer, it might be a good question to ask an agent or manager?but this year I wrote my first pilot, and the response has been fantastic. I?m taking both TV and feature meetings as a result, but you have to do your homework if you?re transitioning from features. I watched everything on TV and read as many pilot scripts in development that I could get my hands on. Write something original. You can take more chances in TV and explore more complicated characters ? just look at all the amazing shows on cable right now. Whether you?re in TV or feature-land, writers are constantly asked ?What?s next?? so we must have a few concepts we have yet to write, articles that sparked an idea, or books we?d love to adapt.

What is up next for you?

Well, I have a ton of Generals on the books. I am chasing a novel I?d love to adapt, and the producers attached to my pilot are preparing to package it. I?m gearing up for my first TV staffing season, and next week I?m meeting a director who took an interest to a supernatural thriller I recently finished. I?m outlining two pilot concepts and one feature idea I?ve been dying to write for the past year, so I?m just trying to figure out what makes the most sense for me to write first.

What advice do you have for writers just starting out?

Study screenwriting! Learn the industry. Read screenwriting books, and get feedback on your material before you submit it anywhere! If your scripts aren?t placing in the top screenwriting contests, or getting any feedback from agents, managers, or producers, find out why. It might hurt your ego, but you must get a variety of opinions, and if you really want to work as a professional screenwriter you get critiqued daily, sometimes your work is massacred, so get used to it!

Get coverage if you don?t have industry friends or acquaintances. I do development notes, coverage, and critiques, and the biggest frustration I have when speaking with writers who?ve written one script and don?t understand why they aren?t rolling in dough is that they refuse to hear any negative feedback. When you?ve completed a draft you feel is ready to be critiqued, get feedback from 5 sources ? AND rewrite, rewrite, rewrite before resubmitting. This is a tough industry, and you have to be dedicated to this because success rarely happens over night, especially now when it?s so tough to sell a spec script or get a writing assignment if you don?t have credits on IMDB.

Write every day. Stay on top of industry trends and sales. Read scripts. WATCH MOVIES. So many writers say they don?t watch movies, and I don?t understand why they want to write them if they don?t watch them.

I can?t stress enough how important personality and professionalism are. Be polite in emails. Be nice to readers, receptionists, and assistants. Meetings are auditions for future writing gigs. Be nice. Be nice. Be nice! Execs are more likely to fight for you and your material if you?re a pleasant person.

If you can, join or create a writer?s group. Navigating this business can be tough, especially if you don?t have a great support system who understands rejection and the amount of work a screenwriter must do to finish a script. It can take a year (or longer) to finish a script, and it can ?die? in 2 weeks (or less). That sucks. You need people by your side who understand just how much it sucks, and who will inspire you to keep writing. My writers group offers unconditional support, and we?ve seen amazing successes in the two years since we?ve formed. We help each other break stories, craft stronger characters, and when we have a crappy day we know there are six other writers we can call who will get it. So?.if you can form a writer?s group, do it!

Marissa Jo Cerar is an alumnus of Film Independent?s Project: Involve program and a member of the WGA Indie Caucus. She?s repped by Heroes & Villians Entertainment and ICM. Her script FRENEMIES was listed as one of the best unproduced spec scripts in Hollywood on the 2010 HIT LIST; her script NEXT SEASON was a semi-finalist in Francis Ford Coppola?s 2011 Zoetrope Screenwriting contest, and her script CONVERSION won 2nd place in the 2011 Written Image Screenwriting competition. CONVERSION was recently selected for the HIT LIST and the BLACK LIST in 2012, and is currently in development at State Street Pictures.

Wife says poisoned lottery winner had no enemies

CHICAGO (AP) ? The wife of a Chicago lottery winner who was poisoned with cyanide said Tuesday she was devastated by his death and cannot believe her husband could have had enemies.

Shabana Ansari spoke to The Associated Press a day after news emerged that 46-year-old Urooj Khan's death in July was the result of cyanide poisoning and not natural causes, as authorities initially concluded. Prosecutors, Chicago police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating Khan's death as a homicide, but they have not given any details, announced any suspects or said whether they believed the lottery win could have presented a motive.

Ansari would not talk about the circumstances of her husband's death, saying it was too painful to recall. She said only that he fell ill shortly after they had dinner together.

She described Khan as a hard-working and generous man who would send money to orphanages in their native India.

"I was shattered. I can't believe he's no longer with me," the short, soft-spoken Ansari said tearfully, standing in one of three dry-cleaning businesses her husband started after immigrating to the U.S. from India in 1989.

Khan's death on July 20 was initially ruled a result of natural causes. But a relative's request for a deeper look resulted in the startling conclusion months later that Kahn was killed with the poison as he was about to collect $425,000 in winnings. Authorities won't identify the relative. Ansari, who said she has spoken with police detectives about the case, said she was not the one who asked for a deeper investigation and that she doesn't know who it was.

"I don't think anyone would have a bad eye for him or that he had any enemy," said Ansari, adding that she continues to work at the dry cleaner out of a desire to honor her husband and protect the businesses he built.

Khan planned to use the lottery winnings to pay off mortgages, expand his business and give a donation to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Ansari said her husband did not have a will and the money is now tied up in probate.

She said she hopes the truth of what happened to her husband will come out. She said she could not recall anyone unusual or suspicious coming into their lives after the lottery win became public.

Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told reporters Tuesday that he had never seen anything like Khan's case in his 32 years of policing in New York, New Jersey and now Chicago.

"So, I'm not going to say that I've seen everything," McCarthy said.

Authorities plan to exhume Khan's body in the next few weeks in hopes they might be able to test additional tissue samples and bolster evidence if the case goes to trial.

"It's always good if and when the case goes to trial to have as much data as possible," said Cook County Medical Examiner Stephen Cina. He added that he did not believe additional testing would change the conclusion that Khan was a homicide victim, saying those comprehensive toxicology results were validated in the lab.

"Based on the investigative information we have now and the (toxicology results), we're comfortable where we are right now," he said.

Ansari, 32, moved to the U.S. from India after marrying Khan 12 years ago.

Khan and his wife were born in Hyderabad, a city in southern India, and their story is a typical immigrant's tale of settling in a new land with big dreams and starting a business. Their daughter, Jasmeen, now 17, is a student here.

"Work was his passion," Ansari said of her husband, adding that she plans to stay in the U.S. and keep his businesses running.

"I'm just taking care of his hard work," she said.

She recalled going on the hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, with her husband in 2010, an awe-inspiring trip that was a first for both of them. One of Islam's pillars requires every able-bodied Muslim to make the journey at least once in their lifetime.

She said her husband returned even more set on living a good life and stopped buying the occasional lottery ticket.

Nonetheless, he couldn't resist buying one for an instant lottery game in June while at a 7-Eleven near his home in the West Rogers Park neighborhood on the city's north side. It was a $1 million winner.

Khan opted for a lump sum of slightly more than $600,000. After taxes, the winnings amounted to about $425,000, said lottery spokesman Mike Lang. The check was issued on July 19, the day before Khan died.

Some other states allow winners to remain anonymous, but Illinois requires most winning ticket holders to appear for a news conference and related promotions, partly to prove that the state pays out prizes. Khan's win didn't draw much media attention, and Lang noted that press events for $1 million winners are fairly typical.

"We do several news conferences a month for various amounts," he said.

Prez Inauguration Ticketmaster Fiasco Reminds Us The Private Sector Screws Up, Too

images (34)Those waiting patiently to buy a ticket for President Obama's final inaugural ball will be disappointed to know that they were accidently all sold out last Sunday. "A technical error" from Ticketmaster's system sent an email a day early and led to a flood of premature sales that sold out the entire stock of public tickets. For all the grumbles about government incompetence, the fumble is noteworthy since this was a private company taking over the responsibilities of a state function. It's a helpful reminder: the private sector screws up, too.

Choosing The Best Quality Skateboard You Can Pay For For Your ...

Skateboarding is a superb recreational exercise which has acquired massive recognition in the past few years. A lot of people don?t try it, thinking it to be a high risk game. Little do these individuals realize that if they?re cautious, they could quickly avert injuries while skateboarding. Skating in the appropriate places, while using right skateboard and putting on pads for protection allow you to evade several injury. The truth is, skateboarding boosts your current flexibility and fitness. It?s also great for cardiovascular fitness.

The trend for skate boarding has risen enormously among the youngsters as they love the thrill and excitement in testing out various stunts and tricks of skateboarding. The deck is moved by one foot as the other stays over the board. Though skateboarding is an enjoyable sport, many people likewise use it for little distances.

Hence, once you have made a decision to obtain a 24 skateboards Australia for yourself, you must take into account a couple of things to be able to produce the correct decision. Width of skateboards is among the main issues that need your attention at the moment. In case, you?re a little short in height like somewhere around 5 feet, a board with a width of maximum 8 inches would be a good plan. For those who have the height of almost 6 feet, the width of the board needs to be no less than 8 inches. The right choice of skateboard will make sure that you feel in proportion and comfy when you aim to stand on top of it.

Trucks that needs to be paired with your skateboard would be the next thing that should be looked at. Trucks can be purchased in varying widths. Turning radius of the skater is shorter when the trucks are wide and also the landing on the floor can also be quite stable in that case. Thin trucks are lighter in weight and thus permit skaters to do their stunts and tricks. Also, when you try to grind or slide with any edge with the skateboard by using your trucks instead of your deck or even wheels, you need to ensure that main bolt in truck does not create any problem for yourself by sticking up with grinding surface.

To guarantee complete protection, it is better to not acquire low cost skateboards from skateboard store and toy shops. An Online skateboard shop is usually the smartest choice available today. Simply read through the online brochure and the board is going to be sent at your front door. The longboards and skateboards purchased from stores might be poorly made with wheels and trucks that may break quickly.

Furthermore, you can?t enhance these boards. In other words, if perhaps one of their parts fails, you?ll have to purchase a new board completely. If you cannot afford to acquire an expensive skateboard, you don?t need to end up with such cheap skateboards. Just choose reasonably priced boards at skateboard store on the internet. You can also get a multitude of longboards and mountain boards at skateboard retailers on the net. Hence, now you understand how to select the right skateboard and the place to get your board, just what are you waiting around for? Rush and grab one today!

Day 1 of the Mobile Nations 2013 CES Experience a HUGE Success!

Mobile Nations 2013 CES Experience

Thought I'd pen a quick roundup for you all this evening (or is it morning!?). Yesterday was a LONG but VERY enjoyable day here on the 2013 CES Experience. Long travels for many, a shorter distance for others? but we've all made it and we're all having a great time!

The day started for most of us by hopping on a plane (or 2 or 3), to make it to Vegas in time for a casual meet and greet with NVIDIA and Mobile Nations. As a special surprise, NVIDIA opened a box and handed each of the 'experience' participants a brand new Nexus 7... to keep! How cool is that!? After the excitement of a new tablet in-hand calmed down, we all took part in the NVIDIA press conference that took place at the RAIN Nightclub in the Palms Hotel and Casino. Front row seats were enjoyed by all, and the announcements (namely the Tegra 4 processor and Project Shield) blew the group away.

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announces the Tegra 4 processor with 4G LTE

Now that we've got day 1 under our belt, it's time to hit the town a little bit tomorrow. If you'd like to follow some of the great folks on the CES experience to check out their pictures, Rich Cermele (pkcable on CrackBerry), Martin Reisch (safesolvent on iMore) and Robert Brown have been hitting twitter hard thus far. Your Sunday Sinatra: ?The Coffee Song? - Tv Food and Drink

?You date a girl and find out later? She smells just like a percolator? Her perfume was made right on the grill? Why, they could percolate the ocean in Brazil ?

Released in March, 1961, Ring-a-Ding-Ding was Frank Sinatra?s first album on the Reprise label, founded by Sinatra himself one year before in an effort to allow himself more creative recording freedom after breaking with Capitol.

Solely in charge of album production for the very first time, Sinatra delivered a parade of upbeat swing numbers, without the assistance of conductors/arrangers Nelson Riddle and Billy May, who were both still under contract at Capitol. Stepping in was Johnny Mandel, who later went on to co-write the Oscar-winning song ?The Shadow of Your Smile? from The Sandpiper, and ?Suicide is Painless,? better known as the theme from the the film and television show, M*A*S*H.

Be sure to listen for the cowbell coming from the percussion section, a must for any song looking deliver a South American vibe.

Cognitive deficits from concussions still present after two months

Jan. 7, 2013 ? The ability to focus and switch tasks readily amid distractions was compromised for up to two months following brain concussions suffered by high school athletes, according to a study at the University of Oregon.

Research team members, in an interview, said the discovery suggests that some athletes may need longer recovery periods than current practices dictate to lower the risk of subsequent concussions. Conventional wisdom, said lead author David Howell, a graduate student in the UO Department of Human Physiology, has typical recovery at seven to 10 days.

"The differences we detected may be a matter of milliseconds between a concussed person and a control subject, but as far as brain time goes that difference for a linebacker returning to competition too soon could mean the difference between another injury or successfully preparing to safely tackle an oncoming running back," Howell said.

The findings are based on cognitive exercises used five times over the two months with a pair of sensitive computer-based measuring tools -- the attentional network test and the task-switching test. The study focused on the effects of concussions to the frontal region of the brain, which is responsible for working, or short-term, memory and executive function, said Li-Shan Chou, professor of human physiology and director of the UO Motion Analysis Laboratory.

The study was published online ahead of print by Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

"If a person goes back to the playing field without a full recovery, that person is put into great danger of being re-injured," Chou said. "In any given season, if you suffer a concussion, the chances of your suffering a second one is three to six times higher and suffering a third is eight times higher. There are accumulations in this kind of injury. It doesn't go away easily."

A big unknown, the researchers said, is just how serious such injuries are for adolescents, whose brains are still developing. It could be the brain can recover more easily, or such injuries could continue to produce deficits that last a lifetime. "We just don't know," Chou said, adding that most previous studies have involved college-aged athletes and older adults.

Each year, there are 300,000 to 500,000 mild traumatic brain injury incidents, or concussions, with 100,000 tied to football, Chou said. He also cited a 2011 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that called such injuries a silent epidemic, with sports-related concussions in youths rising by 60 percent in the last decade. Another source of concussions, he added, is improvised explosive devices used in warfare.

Through an arrangement with Eugene-area schools, 20 high school athletes who had suffered a concussion -- primarily football players but also others from soccer, volleyball and wrestling -- were assessed within 72 hours of injury and then again one week, two weeks, a month and two months later. Each of the subjects, whose diagnosis was made by a certified athletic trainer and/or physician, was matched with a healthy control subject of the same sex, body size, age and sport.

"After two months following the concussions, these individuals were still significantly impaired in their executive function, compared to age-matched, activity-matched and gender-matched control populations," said co-author Louis Osternig, professor emeritus of human physiology and a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Osternig, also a certified athletic trainer, noted that self-reports by the subjects about how they were feeling sometimes were at odds with test results, which continued to show subtle deficits in cognitive functioning. The researchers also noted anecdotal reports from concussed athletes and their parents of declines in academic performance during the two-month period.

Additional data linking the deficits found in cognitive testing to the subjects' gait -- their task-shifting abilities while walking -- currently are being analyzed in the ongoing project, which is funded by the Department of Defense Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center (W81XWH-11-1-0717), National Athletic Trainers Association, Veterans Administration and a translational research award from a joint UO-PeaceHealth Oregon Region collaboration program.

"By using tools from cognitive psychology, neuroscience and human physiology, this interdisciplinary team of scientists is improving our understanding of how brain trauma affects reaction time, and they are helping to create better outcomes for athletes, soldiers and others who are affected by concussions," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation and dean of the graduate school. "UO researchers are working to improve the health and well-being of people in our local communities and throughout the world."

"The brain is the controller of our body movement," Chou said. "If you have a brain injury, are there any differences that we can pick up in the way a subject moves the body? In this lab, we are using motion analysis as a way to detect any deficiencies or abnormalities of body movement."

Chou said that his lab's goal, for now, is to disseminate the findings to the public and to talk to parents, athletic trainers and, perhaps, coaches directly to say: "These are the facts. We may not be able to draw any line on what clinically should or shouldn't be done. However, these are our observations based on our scientific testing."
