(AP) ? Egypt's new President Mohammed Morsi assigned himself the heavyweight's role in the Middle East on Wednesday, declaring in his first speech to the United Nations that the civil war raging in Syria is the "tragedy of the age" and must be brought to an end.

In a wide-ranging address that touched on all major issues confronting the region, Morsi also decried Israeli settlement-building on territory Palestinians claim for a future state and condemned a film produced in the United States that denigrates Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

He urged all U.N. member nations to join in an effort to end what he called "the catastrophe in Syria" that pits the regime of Bashar Assad against opposition forces trying to end 40 years of dictatorship. More than 30,000 people have been killed in the 18-month conflict.

Morsi has called for Assad to step down and said Wednesday that "the bloodshed in Syria and the humanitarian crisis that has unfolded must be stopped."

Morsi, an Islamist and key member of the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood, opened his remarks to the U.N. General Assembly by celebrating himself as Egypt's first democratically elected leader who was swept into office after what he called a "great, peaceful revolution" that overthrew Hosni Mubarak.

He then quickly inserted himself into the thorniest issues in the Middle East, demanding that the United Nations grant membership to the Palestinians, with or without a peace agreement with Israel.

"The fruits of dignity and freedom must not remain far from the Palestinian people," he said, adding that it was "shameful" that U.N. resolutions are not enforced.

The Palestinians are expected to again ask for U.N. recognition and formally make application to the world body in November, after the U.S. presidential election. President Barack Obama said when the Palestinians sought recognition last year that Washington would block the move until there was a peace deal with Israel. The focus of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, which have been on hold for four years, is a two-state solution that would formally grant the Palestinians the rights of an independent country.

In his bid to end the violence in Syria, Morsi has invited Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia to join a contact group, though the Saudis have not yet participated and the fighting in Syria continues unabated. While Morsi wants Assad to step aside, he said Wednesday that he opposes any foreign military intervention.

The U.N. Security Council, which could call for intervention or global sanctions against Syria, is deadlocked because Russia, Assad's main protector, and China have blocked a series of resolutions brought by Western governments.

Morsi also denounced as an obscenity the anti-Islam video that portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a womanizer, a child molester and a fraud, insisting that freedom of expression does not allow for attacks on any religion.

He also condemned the violence that swept Muslim countries last week in reaction to the video. At least 51 people were killed, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans targeted in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.

"Egypt respects freedom of expression. One that is not used to incite hatred against anyone. One that is not directed toward one specific religion or culture. A freedom of expression that tackles extremism and violence. Not the freedom of expression that deepens ignorance and disregards others," Morsi said.

He appeared to have been responding to Obama's General Assembly speech Tuesday in which the U.S. leader again condemned the video but sternly defended the U.S. Constitution's free speech guarantees.

In Cairo, Egyptians watched Morsi's speech closely for signs of how he would conduct his presidency. Sahar Abdel-Mohsen, a 31-year architect, praised Morsi's condemnation of the Assad regime, but questioned his assertions about free speech.

"How can he talk about freedom of expression when there are many protesters in detention in Egypt, including minors, and when people are locked up for the so-called contempt of religion?" she said.

The head of the Arab League, meanwhile, called for the international community to criminalize blasphemy, warning that insults to religion pose a serious threat to global peace and security.

Nabil Elaraby's comments to a special session of the U.N. Security Council put him at direct odds with the United States and its Western allies, which are resolutely opposed to restrictions on freedom of expression. However, Elaraby said that if the West has criminalized acts that result in bodily harm, it must also criminalize acts that cause "psychological and spiritual harm."

Earlier Wednesday, Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, known for past fiery denunciations of the United States and Israel, spoke at length about his vision for a new world order without the "hegemony of arrogance."

Of Israel, he cited what he termed the "continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation."

The U.S. delegation boycotted Ahmadinejad's speech in response to the "paranoid theories and repulsive slurs against Israel" included in a separate address delivered by the Iranian president on Monday.

"It's particularly unfortunate that Mr. Ahmadinejad will have the platform of the U.N. General Assembly on Yom Kippur, which is why the United States has decided not to attend," Erin Pelton, spokeswoman for the U.S. Mission to the U.N., said in a statement.

Thousands of protesters in yellow vests emblazoned with photos of Iranian dissidents they said were killed by the Iranian regime gathered outside U.N. headquarters during the Iranian leader's speech. Speakers included former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-NY, and former Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I.

Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast was threatened by members of the protest crowd as he walked near the United Nations. He was confronted by the angry mob, said New York police spokesman Paul Browne. The diplomat flagged down police officers, who helped him get to a safe spot. Browne said the threats were believed to have been verbal.

In his speech on Wednesday, Ahmadinejad did not refer to Iran's nuclear program. Israel and Western nations contend that Tehran is using what it insists is a peaceful nuclear program as a cover for developing the ability to build atomic weapons.

Tough sanctions have been imposed on Iran as punishment for its failure to cooperate with the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency to prove the peaceful nature of its drive to enrich uranium to levels that could be used to build a nuclear weapon.

Israel has threatened a military strike against Iranian nuclear installations, but Obama insists there is still time to solve the dispute through diplomacy. He has vowed, however, to stop Tehran from obtaining a nuclear arsenal.

Outside the U.N., Alex Mohammed, 40, a restaurant manager from Chicago, stood next to a mock jail cell with a noose next to it, and a cartoon of Ahmadinejad standing under a series of hanged Iranians' legs and the inscription: "We don't have political prisoners in Iran ? anymore."

"It's getting worse in Iran, because the dictator is taking away more freedoms, including freedom of speech, and jailing journalists," said Mohammed, who has family in Tehran.

Methods to Become Successful in Life

There are so many self-help books available on the internet and in bookstores, however, not many people are able to use those methods described in the writing. The reason is that most of these books are built around an ideology or belief, and if the person who is reading does not believe in the statements they would certainly not be able to apply the methods. Therefore, there are some general advice books and readings to provide people with guidance without making them believe in the power of ?New Age? or ?Buddhism?. Some of these are detailed below.

Paying Attention

It is important to pay attention to the details and find the pattern. If a person does not care about the small things they would never appreciate the gifts of life. Counting blessings when looking around us and saying thanks for the food on the table are very good practices to maintain a good attitude and aim towards success.

Relationships

Relationships (good ones) empower the person. Staying connected to those who support us and love being around is better than holding on to a number of friends who are only looking for small talk and gifts for Christmas. No time spent on building relationships is wasted, and plenty of energy can be gained from others who think the same way and honestly wish the best.

Accepting the Unchangeable

Most people are unable to achieve success because they focus on what is wrong. There are some things people have control of, others cannot be changed. It is impossible to carry on blaming the government for making the life of self-employed people harder and focusing on success. However, if one accepts the situation, it is easier to realistically set goals and adjust their route to the circumstances, giving success a greater chance to knock on the door.

Learning from Failures

Instead of blaming one?s self for failing, it is better to look at the mistakes made objectively and assess what could have gone better. Most successful people achieved extraordinary results because they did not dwell on their mistakes but managed to learn from them. Finding the ways to improve a business and not giving up is a very valuable ability for everyone who would like to become independent and achieve success.

Confidence

There is no way a person will be taken seriously without self-confidence. Therefore, believing in one?s worth is extremely important. It does not mean that every businessperson should be pushy or aggressive, but it only means that they believe that they have the same worth as other people. In other words: they have just as much right to success and a good life as others.

Let Go

Living in the shadow of one?s own mistakes holds them back from success. Letting things go can be achieved by meditation or self-programming, and it is an important step. Old pain and bad experiences can keep one from trying again or being open for new adventures. Businesspeople should be able to take risks and if they are anxious about the results they would not make a move. Looking ahead of the future instead of looking back into the past is the right approach to success.

Positive Focus

Paying attention to the positive things creates the right mindset for business. People can find opportunities easier if they look at the bright side of things. Instead of looking at a market and saying that there is too much competition, a positive person would say that as there are many people on the marketplace, it must be truly profitable. Being afraid and making assumptions based on one negative can make a difference between making it in the business world and struggling.

Call Me Maybe (or NOT!) ? Larry James' CelebrateLove.com BLOG

In every relationship it is important to communicate or stay in touch with your loved one. Today there are many ways to stay in touch.

A new device hits the market and everything changes ? but, really, not everything changes. Communication itself has not changed; it is the means we actually use to communicate that changes almost daily.

tincanphonesAt a recent trip to a fast-food place I observed a couple, probably in their 50?s. They were chowing down for about 25 minutes. She was on her cell phone for the first 4 or 5 minutes. On my way to get a drink refill I noticed that he was playing Angry Birds on his smart phone. She did most of the talking, mostly asking yes and no questions. Her voice was loud. If you don?t want anyone to hear your conversation don?t use your phone in restaurants. Chances are those near you don?t want to hear your conversation either. I only heard him utter 4 words during their dinner: ?Huh?,? ?Yeah,? ?Yep,? and ?Okay.? Several times he just shook his yes instead of speaking. How sad. Do your best to never let your relationship slip into a ?no communication? mode.

There are many ways to communicate nowadays. From smart phones, text messaging (a text cannot only be misunderstood but also misread and misinterpreted), Skype, webcams, Facebook, Twitter and e-mail, the facilitation of communication has never been more available. The way cell phones are made today you can do just about anything with them; you can talk, send text messages, take pictures, video record, voice record, listen to radio, download and play Mp3?s, and surf the internet. There has been more and more discussion about how this technology is affecting our relationships and interaction with people in our everyday lives.

coupletalking2Divided attention and distraction are only two of the issues. The lack of visual cues including gestures, facial expressions and posture creates challenges. Miscommunication is another common problem. Not having a phone nearby seems to help foster closeness, connectedness, interpersonal trust, and perceptions of empathy ? the building-blocks of relationships.

Don?t make your phone the lifeline for your love life. Sharing emotions over the phone could threaten your relationship, a new Purdue University study found. When far-apart couples revealed feelings, they were less likely to idealize each other, which can lead to dissatisfaction. ?If self-disclosure isn?t accompanied by body language, it can be hard to convey understanding,? says study author Ji-Yeon Lee, PhD. If she unloads over the phone, you would be wise to describe your ?physical? reaction by saying, ?I wish I could hug you,? or ?I wish you were here with me now, etc.? This requires really paying attention to what your partner is saying. Not actively listening is a pure form of disrespect. That is often easy to do in long conversations by phone.

Another recent set of studies by Andrew K. Przybylski and Netta Weinstein of the University of Essex showed that our phones can hurt our close relationships. Amazingly, they found that simply having a phone nearby, without even checking it, can be detrimental to our attempts at interpersonal connection.

It?s one thing to use the phone to occasionally stay in touch, however, if you are spending the day with people you really care about, you might want to reconsider the next time you reach for your phone to reply to a text message or check sports scores.

?For couples in which things have been so difficult that they both are considering ending the relationship, problems arising from a difficult phone conversation may push their relationship to the tipping point,? says University of Minnesota professor, Paul Rosenblatt.

pillowtalkFace to face is always best. When communicating face to face, nonverbal behaviors provide context clues for the words we use. Sarcasm and jokes without nonverbal context cues can cause frustration. So, it?s best to use your phone for short, quick check-ins instead of long conversations. Long phone conversations seem to inhibit feelings of intimacy you?d otherwise get when you?re sitting face-to-face with someone.

Dr Daniel Kruger, University of Michigan, the lead author of another study, said that women?s desire for communication, emotional bonding and affection is at peak when their partners fell asleep after having a passionate session of love.

?Rarely is there a time when it is appropriate to withhold relevant communication in a love relationship. Communication is too important to take casually. Say what you mean. Say what you feel in a loving way and say it nevertheless. When you say what you know needs to be said, you will never have to worry about saying the wrong thing.? ~ Larry James

Secret revelations about yourself to your love partner; the relevant truth ? meaning revelations that relate to the love relationships? well being ? make for intimate conversation that can assist a healthy love relationship to grow more passionate and deeply more intimate.

P.S. Pillow-talk is fun too! ;-) Pillow talk plays a vital role in happy relationships.

Emphasize Your Potential Rather Than Your Accomplishments When Selling Yourself [Interviews]

Emphasize Your Potential Rather Than Your Accomplishments When Selling YourselfA person's track record of success is the most important factor determining whether he or she gets hired, right? Well, maybe not. According to Stanford and Harvard Business School studies, we have an unconscious preference for potential over actual, proven success.

In the series of studies, the researchers found that participants who evaluated job candidates preferred the one who scored highly on a test of leadership potential over the one who had two years of experience and a high score on leadership achievement.

This same unconscious preference was revealed in other fields:

The researchers showed how we prefer artwork and artists with potential to win awards over those that actually have, and prefer restaurants and chefs with the potential to be the next big thing in dining over the ones who have already made their name. In a particularly clever study, they compared two versions of Facebook ads for a real stand-up comedian. In the first version, critics said "he is the next big thing" and "everybody's talking about him." In the second version, critics said he "could be the next big thing," and that "in a year, everybody could be talking about him." The ad that focused on his potential got significantly more clicks and likes.

The researchers theorize that because potential is less certain, it is more interesting to us and we tend to pay more attention to it. All that extra processing could lead (unconsciously) to a more positive view of a person or company.

So if you don't have any experience in a job you want, don't worry about it. Focus your pitch on your future rather than on your past, Harvard Business Review recommends, and use the power of potential to your advantage.

Strikers shut AngloGold Ashanti mines in SAfrica

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Disruptions to South Africa's key mining sector increased as AngloGold Ashanti said Wednesday that strikers have halted all its operations in the country, which provide 32 percent of the multinational's gold production.

Strikes demanding higher salaries began at a Lonmin Platinum mine Aug. 10 and have spread to several others in the mining sector vital to Africa's largest economy. Anglo American Platinum workers have been striking for weeks. The labor unrest moved Monday to the transport sector with a major union saying 20,000 road freight employees are demanding a 12 percent pay rise.

AngloGold Ashanti spokesman Alan Fine said strikers prevented Tuesday's night shift from starting at the company's West Wits and Vaal River operations. They joined co-workers who downed tools at AngloGold's Kopanang mine on Sept. 20.

Fine said strikers, who are among 36,000 workers at the three sites, have not yet made demands.

Hundreds of Anglo American Platinum Mine workers gathered at the Bleskop stadium near Rustenburg on Wednesday to discuss the new terms they've given Amplats. Workers yesterday met with mine management and said they now demand a monthly take home pay of 12,500 rand ($1,560). Strike leader Gaddafi Mdoda said that the company will have seven days to respond, and the strikes will continue.

Amplats called the strikes illegal in a statement released Wednesday, and threatened disciplinary action for employees who "persist in unlawful strike action" on Thursday.

"We have repeatedly urged our employees to come back to work and I do so again," said Chris Griffith, CEO of Anglo American Platinum. "Our Rustenburg mining operations are under considerable economic pressure and their future is already under review."

Anglo American Platinum is the world's largest producer of the precious metal used in jewelry and to reduce carbon emissions of high-end vehicles.

Police were on standby at the stadium.

Mining is a crucial sector in the South African economy. South Africa produces 75 percent of the world's platinum and is the No. 4 chrome producer and the fifth-biggest gold producer. South Africa produces 7 percent of the world's production of gold.

The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union said in a Wednesday statement that industrial action will be consolidated "to ensure that the employers start feeling the heat and return to the negotiations table."

Vincent Masogo of SATAWU said that at least 1,000 started marching in South Africa's eastern port city of Durban, and gatherings will continue in Johannesburg. He said they have called on workers to refrain from violence. Strikers on Tuesday threw stones at trucks driving by.

The transport union said there are no talks at the moment, and they hope the unrest will spread until a deal is reached.

"We intend to ignite further sympathy and solidarity strikes from our members in sectors such as maritime and freight rail in an effort to ensure that no goods and parcels move till the road freight workers' demands are fully met," the statement said.

Mark Webber hit with 20-second time penalty for passing Kamui Kobayashi illegally ? Formula 1 news

Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has faced a 20-second time penalty for overtaking Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber illegally in the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix.

Webber went wide while passing Kobayashi at turn 7 and had all his four tyres off the track. Therefore, he was hit by the 20-second penalty on the discretion of the race stewards for gaining an unfair benefit during the race.

?Notwithstanding that the distance by which car 2 left the circuit was minimal, advantage was gained hence a breach did in fact occur,? the stewards explained.

Furthermore, after being hit by the penalty, the Australian driver dropped from 10th to 11th position and could not be able to score even a single point in the previous race at Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Later on, when he was asked about the incident, he said that he felt nothing wrong with the move. He also said that such occurrences happen because the competition is very tough and every driver in the field tries his best to gain positions in the race.

?We were racing pretty hard and fair I think but we used all we could down there so I think it was a good clean fight,? said Webber.

In addition, he said that he was performing quite convincingly and was contended with his pace but the second safety car spoiled his timing due to which he went aggressive later on.

?I wasn't too bad pace wise,? he said. ?The strategy was going alright, but the second safety car really hurt us and put us to the back of the queue. Around here, fighting and looking after your tyres is a bit of a mess. It's a shame.?

On the other hand, his teammate, Sebastian Vettel claimed an incredible victory after Lewis Hamilton of McLaren retired because of a gearbox issue. Additionally, the veteran German performed amazingly well and successfully secured his second win of the current season after taking a start from third grid position.

Over and above, the Aussie said that although he could not score any point in the night race, nonetheless, he is feeling happy that Vettel scored some competitive points for the team.

State policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will have maximum health benefits if coupled with policies to reduce near-roadway exposure, study says

LOS ANGELES Research conducted at the University of Southern California (USC) indicates that at least 8 percent of the more than 300,000 cases of childhood asthma in Los Angeles County can be attributed to traffic-related pollution at homes within 75 meters (a little less than 250 feet) of a busy roadway.

The study also indicates that previous estimates of childhood asthma exacerbation related to air pollution may have underestimated the true burden of exposure on society. The research was published online Sept. 24, 2012, in Environmental Health Perspectives and was conducted in collaboration with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute and Sonoma Technology, Inc. The study focused on the Los Angeles basin.

"Our findings suggest that there are large and previously unappreciated public health consequences of air pollution in Los Angeles County and probably other metropolitan areas with large numbers of children living near major traffic corridors," said Rob McConnell, professor of preventive medicine, Keck School of Medicine of USC.

The USC study also looked at new state of California policies intended to cut back on vehicular greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. An important goal of these policies is to reduce vehicular emissions of greenhouse gases, both by improving fuel efficiency and reducing vehicle miles traveled by increasing use of public transportation. As part of these policies, housing developers would be offered incentives, such as speeding up environmental review to design projects located closer to transit stops with bus or rail service that will encourage use of fuel efficient mass transit. The investigators note, however, that transit stops are often located on or near busy roads and that there has been little study of the impact of these policies on exposure to children living near major roadways.

The study concludes that better information is needed to develop the optimal mix of policies that reduce sprawl, encourage walking and use of mass transit to reduce vehicle miles traveled, greenhouse gases and regional air pollution, and also to reduce children's near-roadway exposure to emissions from vehicles still traveling on roadways.

"Plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change offer an opportunity to develop 'win-win' strategies that will maximize the health benefits from reduction both of greenhouse gases and of air pollutants that directly harm children," McConnell said.

"There is also emerging evidence that other diseases may be caused or exacerbated by urban air pollution, including atherosclerosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and neurological disorders," McConnell added. "Thus, policies to combat climate change may have near-term health benefits beyond reducing the burden of disease due to asthma."

The researchers estimated the effects of air pollution on children suffering from asthma by using data from sources including the Children's Health Study, a long-term study of effects of air pollution ongoing since 1993. Regional air pollution measurements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and area maps were used to estimate exposure to near-roadway pollution in the Los Angeles area. This information was linked to population data.

Asthma exacerbation in this study was connected to regional pollutants including nitrogen dioxide and ozone that cover large parts of the air basin, and to near-roadway pollutants that are responsible for the development of asthma. The researchers found that living near busy roads contributed disproportionately to the more serious exacerbations of asthma in children, including emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

In addition, a 20 percent reduction in children's near-roadway pollution exposure would result in an estimated 5,900 fewer cases of childhood asthma in the County, according to the research, whereas a 20 percent increase in exposure would result in 5,900 more cases of asthma.

###

Funding for the research was provided by funds from British Petroleum (BP) as part of an air quality violations settlement agreement with the South Coast Air Quality Management District, a California state agency. The study also was supported by National Institute of Health grants P30ES007048, P01ES009581, P01ES011627 and R01 ES016535, as well as grants from the Environmental Protection Agency, and support from the Hastings Foundation.

?They play through the system. They want their players to be versatile. I try to picture myself as versatile and work hard for that title every day. That?s one of the things that coach Gottfried wanted me to do.?

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. stocks traded higher Friday, with investors latching on to a few mildly hopeful signs about the economy.

Shortly after noon Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 43 points at 13,640. The Standard & Poor's 500 was up six to 1,466. The Nasdaq composite index was up 16 to 3,192.

Homebuilder KB Home swung to a quarterly profit by selling pricier homes. The stock popped $1.46, or more than 11 percent, to $14.57.

Darden Restaurants, parent of Olive Garden and Red Lobster, also reported a higher profit in its latest quarter. The stock rose $2.47, or more than 4 percent, to $57.19.

Apple, propelled by the frenzy around the release of the iPhone 5, rose $6.12, or just less than 1 percent, to $704.82.

And in Europe, Italy's premier and Greece's prime minister met and repeated their conviction for "the absolute need to safeguard the integrity of the eurozone," according to a statement from the Italian leader's office. Spain appeared near to working out terms for requesting a bailout from Europe.

Both developments points to a Europe that, while still grappling with a heavy debt crisis, is committed to finding a solution.

Still, the market's rise Friday and in recent weeks seems like a paradox against a backdrop of high unemployment, unimpressive economic growth and a looming fiscal cliff, when spending cuts and higher taxes could kick in this year.

That's because the rise has been more about the old adage to not "fight the Fed" rather than hope that the economy is proving.

This week, the Bank of Japan agreed to a new program where it would buy assets to try to prop up the country's market. Last week the Federal Reserve made a similar comment, and before that the European Central Bank did.

But the actions don't mean the economy is improving. In fact, they mean quite the opposite: that the central banks think the economy is bad enough that it can't survive on its own.

Timothy Leach, wealth management chief investment officer for U.S. Bank in San Francisco, described the central banks' actions as positive, but said they're buying time more than fixing underlying fiscal problems.

"But at least they're taking some of the pressure off," Leach said, "allowing policymakers some additional time to try to achieve those real solutions."

Signs of the underlying trouble were abundant.

The Labor Department reported Friday that unemployment rose in 26 states last month. The World Trade Organization cuts its estimates for growth in global trade this year and next.

Darden, despite its higher profits, noted it has to rework the menu to attract customers wary about spending.

Greece still hasn't agreed to a detailed plan to cut spending, which it must do to get the bailout money from Europe. Germany's finance minister argued that Spain doesn't need a second aid program, considering how it already got a bailout for its banks.

Eating For Health, Not Weight

www.nytimes.com:

Almost half of Americans are on a diet -- not surprising, since two-thirds are overweight or obese, a frightening statistic that inspired Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to push through a ban on large soft drinks in New York City. The country is preoccupied with calories. McDonald's, for instance, is now posting them. But our widespread hope for weight loss makes us vulnerable to all kinds of promises, even ones that aren't true, when it comes to food.
