Irfan Pathan pleased with progress in performances ? Cricket News Update
Bolstered by his recently improved performances which have enabled him to rediscover his rhythm, Indian seamer Irfan Pathan expressed his satisfaction with the progress he has made in his slow but steady comeback.
?I'm really happy with my seam position, and I've done a lot of work on that. I'm really happy with the way things are going and the zip that I'm getting off the wicket,? Pathan said.
He went on to explain that while he was frequently criticised for not being an ?out-and-out quick bowler?, the comments had ceased to bother him.
?Everyone has their own gifts and I have my strengths and weaknesses as well,? he said, adding that he was focusing on playing for the love of the game, as opposed to concentrating solely on his performance.
The 27-year-old?s recent performances have displayed a promising upward trend. He was the highest wicket-taker during India?s recent limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka, having claimed 8 scalps during the 5-match ODI series (including a 5 for 61 in the final match, which won him the Player of the Match award), and 3 for 27 during the only T20I. He followed it up with a 3 for 31 in India?s most recent match ? a T20I against New Zealand.
?I've tried to learn a few tricks in terms of thinking out the batsmen,? he explained. ?The more experience I have, the better I'm getting in terms of that. I think that long term, that's what I want to keep working on. I will do whatever the team needs.?
Following his debut in 2003, Pathan was hailed as a swing and seam bowler in the mould of the legendary Kapil Dev. However, he was unable to combat the pressure, and live up to expectations during the initial stages of his career, lacking an element of consistency in his performances. As a result, his place in the side remained uncertain.
While there were highlights such as the 83 in Nagpur against Sri Lanka, his bowling performances fell to an all-time low in 2006, and he was subsequently dropped from the Test and ODI squads.
After a surprise recall and a stellar performance in the 2007-08 edition of the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa, during which he claimed 10 scalps at 14.90, he made his way back into the national team, only to lose his place once again in 2009.
The exile from the team was interspersed with injuries and poor form, including a back injury which kept him out of action for nearly eight months. However, a strong domestic performance (he was the leading wicket-taker in the 2011-12 Ranji Trophy) brought him back on the selectors radar last year, and he went on to feature in an ODI series against the West Indies late last year, followed by the successful limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka.`
