Dish Network will expand their business which will now include broadband services through their satellite dish. The company recently announced that they will be offering their internet services to select states in USA especially in rural areas where broadband connectivity is next to impossible. There are areas in USA that are relatively inaccessible for basic broadband connection and their only method of accessing the internet is through dial-up connectivity. Dial-up only reaches 64kbps which is very slow and sometimes frustrating especially in a rural area where disconnections is a possibility. Dish Network could provide the answer to slow internet connection in remote areas.
Dish Network is banking on the FCC report that there are nearly 15 million Americans who have no access to broadband internet services. It?s a relatively small number compared to the actual total population of the country but since Dish Network is one of the few companies offering an option on high speed connectivity, they could be drawing customers fast. It?s also a way for Dish Network to offer their digital TV through satellite services to more customers even in remote areas.
The package cost offered by Dish Network is actually very competitive. The base price of the satellite internet is $40 a month on top of their existing Dish TV package. With the base price, customers can enjoy up to 5Mbps of data transfer speed which should be good enough for multiple internet access at home with everyone enjoying video streaming and other online activities. Faster data transfer speed (10Mbps) will cost $50 a month on top of the Dish TV package. Customers who only prefers to have satellite internet services at home without the Dish TV package would have to spend $10 more. Additional fees could be incurred especially for first time customers since hardware installation will be required for accessing the internet through dish satellite.
Dish Network will start their internet service offer to customers October 1, 2012. It can be a very attractive offer to customers who simply wants to have internet at home. Instead of spending too much on satellite television, customers may choose to have broadband speed at home to enjoy certain online streaming shows. They could save simply by watching shows online instead of paying additional fees for satellite TV. Of course, the challenge for Dish Network is to actually keep their promised speed since these are rural areas with very limited options on how to connect online.
